Where and how do I use the Smartum commuting benefit?
With the Smartum commuting benefit, employees can purchase a suitable ticket product for their commute or load their travel card at all R-kiosks across Finland. For example, you can load a season ticket or value onto a personal travel card. Check all Smartum commuting benefit locations here and select "Commuting" as the service type.

At R-kiosks, you can purchase various ticket products with the commuting benefit: HSL tickets, OnniBus tickets, VR tickets (commuter season ticket and long-distance ticket for personal use), local transport tickets (in Tampere, Lahti, Jyväskylä, Oulu, Kuopio, Lappeenranta, Pori, Vaasa, Turku), and Matkahuolto tickets. R-kiosks have about 500 stores across Finland.
From Matkahuolto service points you can also purchase Matkahuolto's tickets. You can find them using our location search.
You can also pay with Smartum commuting benefits in the HSL app! In the app, you can buy travel tickets for trams, metro, trains, buses, and ferries. Currently, you can pay for single tickets, 1-7 day tickets, and 30-day tickets with the commuting benefit.
You can select the travel area for the ticket yourself or purchase a ticket covering the entire HSL area. The HSL area includes Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa, Kerava, Sipoo, Tuusula, Kirkkonummi, and Siuntio.
Paying with the Smartum commuting benefit is easy:
- Download the HSL app from your app store. If you already have the app, remember to update it to the latest version.
- Open the app and select "Tickets" from the bottom of the screen.
- Choose the travel ticket you want, select "Add commuting benefit" as the payment method, and tap "Smartum".
- Authenticate yourself as a benefit user with your Smartum or online banking credentials and confirm. Continue, confirm the payment, and you're ready to board!
You only need to authenticate as a Smartum benefit user during the first purchase if you have logged into the SmartumPay mobile app on the same device. In the future, you will be recognized automatically when using your Smartum commuting benefit in the HSL app.
In the VR Matkalla app, you can pay with the Smartum commuting benefit for single, series, and season tickets. You can use the tickets for both work and leisure. Note that you can only use the Smartum commuting benefit for personal trips that do not include a connecting ticket, cancellation insurance, bike, pet, or service fees.
- Download the VR Matkalla app from your app store. If you already have the app, remember to update it to the latest version.
- Open the app and select "Buy" from the bottom of the screen.
- Choose the travel ticket you want, select "Smartum" as the payment method.
- Authenticate yourself as a benefit user with your Smartum or online banking credentials and confirm. Continue, confirm the payment, and you're ready to board!
