      Commute benefit

      The annual limit for the commuter benefit is 3400 euros. Therefore, your employer can offer you up to 3400 euros of tax-free commuter benefit per year.

      Where and how do I use Smartum's commuter benefit?

      With Smartum's commuter benefit, you can purchase suitable ticket products for your work commute or load your travel card at various R-kiosks across Finland. For example, you can load a season pass or value onto your personal travel card. View all locations where you can use Smartum's commuter benefit here and select "Commute" as the service type.

      At R-kiosks, you can use the commuter benefit to purchase various ticket products: HSL tickets, OnniBus tickets, VR tickets (local and long-distance season tickets for personal use), local transport tickets (in Tampere, Lahti, Jyväskylä, Oulu, Kuopio, Lappeenranta, Pori, Vaasa, Turku), and Matkahuolto tickets. There are approximately 500 R-kiosks across Finland.

      You can also use Smartum's commuter benefit in the HSL app! From the app, you can purchase travel tickets for trams, metros, trains, buses, and ferries. Currently, you can use the commuter benefit to purchase single tickets, 1-7 day passes, and 30-day tickets.

      You can customize the travel zone of the ticket yourself or purchase a ticket that covers the entire HSL area. The HSL area includes Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa, Kerava, Sipoo, Tuusula, Kirkkonummi, and Siuntio.

      Paying with Smartum's commuter benefit is easy:

      1. Download the HSL app from your app store. If you already have the app, remember to update it to the latest version.

      2. Open the app and select "Tickets" at the bottom of the screen.

      3. Choose the desired travel ticket, select "Add commuter benefit" as the payment method, and tap "Smartum".

      4. Authenticate yourself as a benefit user with your Smartum or online banking credentials and approve the payment. Continue, approve the payment, and you're ready to board!

      You only need to authenticate yourself as a Smartum benefit user during the first purchase, if you have logged into the SmartumPay mobile app on the same device. In the future, you will be automatically recognized when using your Smartum commuter benefit in the HSL app.

      In the VR Matkalla app, you can use Smartum's commuter benefit to purchase single tickets, multiple ride tickets, and season tickets. You can use these tickets for both work and leisure travel. Please note that you can only use Smartum's commuter benefit for personal trips that do not include a connecting ticket, cancellation protection, bicycle, pet, or service fees.

      1. Download the VR Matkalla app from your app store. If you already have the app, remember to update it to the latest version.

      2. Open the app and select "Purchase" at the bottom of the screen.

      3. Choose the desired travel ticket, select "Smartum" as the payment method.

      4. Authenticate yourself as a benefit user with your Smartum or online banking credentials and approve the payment. Continue, approve the payment, and you're ready to board!
